In this role, Jan made machines that grew industrial crystals. He also travelled to other countries to install the machines, which included the countries China and Bulgaria. Jan collected minerals and gemstones and made a few in the machines. An interest he would retain for the rest of his life.

Jan happened to be in Bulgaria during the Chernobyl disaster, luckily was not in close proximity.
