Jan was part of a youth group during his time at Grammar school called Interact. It was here him and Gaynor met and they made many friends. They would meet up weekly and raise money for charities and help out in the community where possibly. One event included asking shopper for pennies and then laying said pennies on the ground in a line on Commercial Street, to see how far they could go. At the end of the day they were cash into the bank and the money given to charity. Other events include 24hour dance, 24hour silence and decorating people houses.
